What is TEDx?

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, often in the form of short talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED Conferences, intimate TED Salons and thousands of independently organised TEDx events around the world. Videos of these talks are made available, free, on TED.com and other platforms. Audio versions of TED Talks are published to TED Talks Daily, available on all podcast platforms.

TEDx began as a grassroots movement inspired by TED's commitment to exploring and disseminating "ideas worth spreading." Through TEDx events, the essence of TED reaches local communities across the globe. These events are spearheaded by dedicated individuals who are passionate about uncovering new ideas and sharing cutting-edge research specific to their areas, stimulating conversations within their communities. TEDx events, which include both live speakers and recorded TED Talks, operate independently under a free license provided by TED.

Although TED does not oversee these events, organizers agree to follow a set format and are provided with guidelines for selecting topics, coaching speakers, organizing events, and more. They gain insights from TED and from one another.

State of the X
Update November 2023

First, let’s look at TEDx. Today, this is something remarkable: a strong, growing, innovative community, sharing ideas to the world, forever free.

Since the program began, over 42,000 events have been held in over 180 countries and territories.

In 2023 alone, there will be over 3,300 events. That averages 9 events per day.

To date in 2023, over 600,000 attendees have attended TEDx events. We anticipate this to grow significantly by end of year.

The TEDx channel started with 400 talks in 2009. Now with over 200,000, in over 120 languages, these cover an unimaginable array of topics, giving stage to the world’s diverse voices which you discover.

These talks have been cumulatively viewed over 7 billion times, with nearly a billion this year alone (2023).

In December, the channel will reach over 40 million subscribers. 40m! 600k attendees! 3300 events! And all by one shared community.

The numbers are astounding, reminding us that gathering our communities around ideas is so important and needed. What you do is necessary.

And after you’ve inspired your audience in the room, you gift these local ideas to the entire world, forever free.

The first six TED Talks were posted online on June 27, 2006. By September, they had reached more than one million views. TED Talks proved so popular that in 2007, TED's website was relaunched around them, giving a global audience free access to some of the world's greatest thinkers, leaders, and teachers.
